(Summary description)A "letter box", or "letter box" used in the United States and Canada, is a slot, usually horizontal but sometimes vertical, about 30 cm by 5 cm (2 inches, 12 inches), passing through the middle or lower half of the front door. This style is almost universal in British homes and offices, but in the United States is mainly limited to a few old streets in eastern cities. Most are made or sealed on the outside for weather resistance. The flap can be closed under gravity, or it can appear to prevent it from opening and close loudly in the wind. There is also a second flap inside some letter boxes to provide further protection from the elements. There may also be a small cage or box installed on the inside of the door to receive delivered mail. The mail slot is limited to receive mail, because most postmen do not provide security and protection for mail pickup.
Wall-mounted or attached mailboxes can also be used in the mail slot, usually located near the front door of the residence. When they are called "omnidirectional" mailboxes, they are all regulated to ensure outbound and incoming mail. Wall-mounted mailboxes are still in use in old urban areas and suburbs living in North America. They are especially common in cities and suburbs in Canada. Mailboxes on the roadside are rare. Except for the development of new urban and suburban areas with mailboxes in rural areas, and in rural areas in the United States, it is not common to deliver on the roadside or to community postal stations ( Cluster mailbox, called the back box of a bank in the UK) is generally used.
